Customers of a long-lived downtown Black River Falls may have to wait awhile before they can get another mushroom and swiss burger.

Molly's Grill closed its doors Saturday, May 24. The restaurant has been in downtown Black River Falls since 1911. Over the years, it has seen different names and different owners.

Owner Jay Bublitz said the decision to close Molly's doors was both unexpected and difficult to do. "There were a lot of tears shed Saturday when we closed," Bublitz, of Fairchild, said.

Bublitz said he is selling the building due to a promotion he received from his job at Action City and Metropolis Hotel in Eau Claire. Bublitz said he did not want to sacrifice great service to his customers at Molly's by taking on too much responsibility at both places.

Bublitz is selling the building and said people are already showing interest in buying it. The property is listed for $199,000.

Rustic mill to reopen

New owners Al and Lisa Hasting plan to reopen the Old Rustic Mill restaurant on Hwy. 54 southwest of Black River Falls.

They bought it in early May from Marion and Gerry Mayer, who had opened in March 2007 after a renovation. The Mayers later leased it out, but it closed Nov. 17.

The Hastings recently moved from Waterford, Wis. Al has cooked in restaurants for 28 years and his wife has worked in restaurants for 26 years.

The Old Rustic Mill will open with mostly new menus and will include lunch.

The dinner menu will feature items such as steaks, pork chops and seafood. The restaurant will be closed Tuesdays. Its phone number is (715) 284-4913.

Nico's is open

Nick and Sharon Trujillo opened Nico's Mexican Restaurant at 24 N. Water St. in downtown Black River Falls.

"We have Mexican and American food," Nick said. "Everything is home-cooked."

Some of the American food items include hamburgers and char-grilled ribeye, strip and chopped sirloin steaks.

The restaurant will be closed Mondays. Its phone number is (715) 284-2117.

" Molly's closed on a Saturday....the busiest night in the bar/resturant land...I heard he closed down before tax guys could close him on the next Monday and he is now negotiating a settlement... "

" I to will miss Molly's. It was always a good place to go for lunch or dinner. However, I suspect that Re-Pete cut into Molly's business alot. Hopefully the Rustic Mill will go back to the days when it was "The Place to Go" for prime rib at a reasonable price. Black River has a great need for family dining during the evening hours. Certainly the worse place in town to eat is the truck stop. "

" Mollys has not been in Black River since 1911 under any name. "

" I too will miss Molly's. It is nice to have places to go in BRF for dinner other than fast food, and with Molly's closing, the options are reduced. The recent opening of the other restaurants does help though. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the food and the service at many other places in surrounding communities, but sometimes I do not want to drive that far, and Molly's was a nice place to go for a dinner and a drink. The article states there are people already showing interest in the place. I hope so. I also hope whomever does buy the business will make a serious attempt at renovating the building. The building is like a lot of other buildings in downtown BRF - in really rough shape, but with a lot of potential. I think if someone were to buy the business, completely renovate the building, and serve good food for decent prices, they would really have a gem on their hands. Who knows, maybe it will start a trend and other downtown buildings will start getting a much needed overhaul! This is all easy for me to say though, since it is not my money on the line. But it is something I would like to see for the welfare and prosperity of downtown BRF. "

" Sorry to see Molly's close - maybe Cozy's should move back to it's original building!!! "

" Mollys will be sorely missed ... BUT having said that, I have been to NICO's and the food is terrific and you boy do you get a lot of it! Very well worth the try. It will also be nice when Rosario's get's their kitchen up and running! "
