District Attorney Gerald Fox has announced his intention to seek his second term as Jackson County's lead prosecutor.
Fox, a Democrat, was first elected in 2006. The term of the office has now been extended to four years.
"I would appreciate another four years as district attorney," Fox said. "I think I've earned it."
Fox, who has a bachelor's degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University while serving on active duty in the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg, N.C. in 1986, earned his law degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1995. He served in private practice from 1995-99 with Skolos & Skolos in Black River Falls and worked as a State Public Defender from 1999-2006. He was commissioned as a Judge Advocate in the Wisconsin Army National Guard in January 2003.
Fox said he has accomplished the goals in his first term that he set out to do, focusing on child support payment enforcement, driver's safety, stepped up enforcement of worthless checks and has aggressively tackled drug addition. Fox said the new drug court set to start in the county is a positive step and will soon be handling its first candidates very soon.
"I want to ensure that drug court succeeds," Fox said. Seventy-five percent of the people he prosecutes have some sort of drug or alcohol addiction, he said. "This ensures public safety by treating the underlying addictions through a multidisciplinary approach that holds the offenders accountable but also promises them treatment to prevent future crime."
Fox said the county will be able to prove whether drug court works because it will be measured against benchmarks set by the U.S. Department of Justice. He said most drunken drivers will not qualify for drug court because one drunken driving arrest does not mean they have a chemical abuse problem. The program will be paid for mostly through fees paid by the offender.
Fox said he also wants to raise awareness about alcohol and drugged driving with young kids with the goal of preventing fatal accidents.
Fox said he will not lose sight of his main purpose, which is to seek justice in every case and to protect the public. "That's my mission," he said.
One final and important goal that Fox has is to get an armed bailiff in the courthouse to shore up court room security.
"There is a pressing security need and I will do all I can to publicly advocate for it," Fox said.
