Fox to seek another term as DA

District Attorney Gerald Fox has announced his intention to seek his second term as Jackson County's lead prosecutor.

Fox, a Democrat, was first elected in 2006. The term of the office has now been extended to four years.

"I would appreciate another four years as district attorney," Fox said. "I think I've earned it."

Fox, who has a bachelor's degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University while serving on active duty in the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg, N.C. in 1986, earned his law degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1995. He served in private practice from 1995-99 with Skolos & Skolos in Black River Falls and worked as a State Public Defender from 1999-2006. He was commissioned as a Judge Advocate in the Wisconsin Army National Guard in January 2003.

Fox said he has accomplished the goals in his first term that he set out to do, focusing on child support payment enforcement, driver's safety, stepped up enforcement of worthless checks and has aggressively tackled drug addition. Fox said the new drug court set to start in the county is a positive step and will soon be handling its first candidates very soon.

"I want to ensure that drug court succeeds," Fox said. Seventy-five percent of the people he prosecutes have some sort of drug or alcohol addiction, he said. "This ensures public safety by treating the underlying addictions through a multidisciplinary approach that holds the offenders accountable but also promises them treatment to prevent future crime."

Fox said the county will be able to prove whether drug court works because it will be measured against benchmarks set by the U.S. Department of Justice. He said most drunken drivers will not qualify for drug court because one drunken driving arrest does not mean they have a chemical abuse problem. The program will be paid for mostly through fees paid by the offender.

Fox said he also wants to raise awareness about alcohol and drugged driving with young kids with the goal of preventing fatal accidents.

Fox said he will not lose sight of his main purpose, which is to seek justice in every case and to protect the public. "That's my mission," he said.

One final and important goal that Fox has is to get an armed bailiff in the courthouse to shore up court room security.

"There is a pressing security need and I will do all I can to publicly advocate for it," Fox said.

Oh, I know I didnt eather but I am just going with the flow.... "

" If you want a full time DA, Robyn Matousek isn't it. Besides she only represents women. As someone said before ... too much baggage. FYI, I'd vote for DA Fox in a heartbeat and yes, I do work in the system. Maybe it would be beneficial for all of you if DA Fox did have some face to face meetings with his constiuents soon. "

About anonymity. wrote on Jun 3, 2008 12:03 PM:

" I am not a Attern....Attturn..... aw heck, lawyer, so I am unable to run for the elected office of DA. It does not require a law degree to become a judge, yet how far could a person get without a law degree in a bid for Jackson County judge?. this is a pretty "clicky" community. Blue takes care of blue and brown takes care of brown, as is it should be to an extent (those in law enforcement understand that statement)... And the "powers that be" take care of the powers that be. However, Once a person is in the sights of the powers that be... Ohhhhh my... Life could become interesting. So I will maintain my anonymity (I think I spelled that right) and speak out against what I think is wrong. My voice will be loud and clear in the voting booth the next election. I could walk into the DA's office and tell him exactly how I feel and what's he gonna do??.... More than likely be somewhat condescending or a little annoyed. Walk in the Judge's office and tell him what is on my mind?... Ohhhhh K, right, he would more than likely have me up on charges for threatening him. Some say people do not read these blogs... Welllllll Look at the responses. I am exercising my rights under the constituion in a way that will not put me in the crosshairs of the powers that be. As long as I do not threaten or speak an outright slander, which I have no intent, I will continue to do so... Spelling and grammer... gramar..er...or... aw heck again, punctuation errors and all thank you very much. "

" Grammar Time

I get the point, but really, that isn't the issue. And because someone doesn't spell a word right or gets the "your" rather than "you're" it surely doesn't make them any less smart than anyone else. I agree, that these people complaining about the DA and the sheriff and the mayors need to step up and back their words up. If you people feel so compelled to complain, take it straight to the people the problem is with. However, then it is hard to be anonymous. Either way, if you truly believe in what you say, back it up. "

" To Mary Smith. What does all that have to do with DA Fox? You must have a heck of a time reading a novel, newspaper or anything else that doesn't come up to your english teacher standards. In l977 did they teach you about staying on subject? "

" Can't BELIEVE all this! It shows just how low our education system in this state really is. Not a ONE of you previous commenators was able to completely compose thoughts without grammatical and/or spelling errors.

Is this the "text me" mentality shining through? Have we really lost all this knowledge? When I graduated high school in 1977, we had to learn grammar. Maybe today's folks don't have to.

Even the lengthy and well thought out comments from 5/31, with the occasional all-caps words, doesn't know the different between when to say "your" and when to say "you're".

Before you talk law, go to law school. Before you comment on any of this stuff, show you at least have some brains. "

Hmm.... wrote on Jun 2, 2008 6:06 AM:

" Is it just me or does it seem like crime is getting worse in the area? Not only are there worse crimes being committed in Jackson County but now we also have people from bigger cities coming here to hide out. I hope that DA Fox is taking notice of this and that he plans to take a tough stand on future crimes. "

Take it up wrote on Jun 1, 2008 6:41 PM:

" With Mr. Fox. Rather than spending so much time on this site complaining about his work, go strait to the DA's office this week and tell him what a crappy job he is doing at your expense and then have him sit you down and explain the legal system to you. He is an attorney and you are not. If he wasn't doing his job things would change. But maybe what all of you complainers and whiners should do is go straight to where it matters rather than wasting your time typing it out on here..if it is so important to you, you would make a difference. This site doesn't make a bit of difference. "

To Clue Mr. Titter and Opinion wrote on May 31, 2008 11:35 AM:

" Clue., Never EVER did I say that ALL cases should go to court. However, when the first paragraph in just about every artical I have read about SERIOUS cases, where people have DIED!!!... Contain the words "A plea agreement was offered"... Or words to that effect, it makes me frustrated. Cases where people who have died or been injured for life, ESPECIALLY one of our youth NEED to be brought before a jury. It seems that our fearless DA expends more time and energy trying to convict people like the owner of the NCN Campground on disorderly conduct charges (Party after the fact), MONTHS after the incident... I did not see "Plea agreement offered" in THAT case, nope, DA Fox busted his rear end on that one. DA Fox on the other hand busted his rear end to "Plea agreement" Whitegull after murdering (in my opinion) one youth and maiming another youth... Go figure huh?... Where are his priorities?. Mr. Titter, Your words are offensive to say the least. I consider myself to be somewhat intelligent and if selected for jury duty, am able to render a verdict... A fair verdict in any case brought before me. A LOT of people in this county also have the intelligence to act in that capacity. Who do YOU think you are to belittle US... The people in this county. Who am I you may ask, to speak these words about DA Fox?... A TAX PAYING citizen. You work, or did work, for ME... I do not work for YOU. So does DA Fox. DA Fox can plea agreement all the Micky Mouse cases he wants, however, any case involving the death of or serious injury to another... ESPECIALLY involving children, elderly or the disabled... LET US... The citizens of this county decide the fate of those criminals. Also, to My opinion. Those in the law community... I suspect that means Attorney... Sure, your happy that DA Fox does the paperwork shuffle. ANY defense attorney would jump at the chance to "plea agreement"... Read that plea BARGAIN thier client facing serious charges, because one of us unsofiscated Jackson County hicks, on a jury, juuuuust might convict your client and send him or her to jail for a long, long time. We may just suprize you now and again Mr. Titter. the desease of serious cases involving alcohol and drugs killing people are epidemic and the only way to stop any epidemic is to quarentine the people who carry and spread the desease. Traslated: Send the criminals to JAIL... Quarentine those crimials (the desease) so that they may not be allowed to infect with death or serious injury others. The next victim of the desease may just be me or one of my loved ones, or one of YOU or one of your loved ones. I pray that does not happen. "

Matousek..... wrote on May 30, 2008 10:04 PM:

" She could probably do just as good of a job than anyone else in there. Unfortunately, she does have the Haldeman name connection and that is a problem and she can't shake that one. Too many people leary of him and don't trust him. "

Jack Titter wrote on May 30, 2008 8:32 PM:

" Not to beat a dead horse, but I'm willing to be convinced. What has Gerald Fox done wrong that makes you feel that he needs to be replaced? Plea negotiations are a fact of our judicial system. I don't like them, no one likes them, but without them the system would be so bogged down that there would be nothing being done.

I would like to see some more meaningful "punishment" for drunken drivers, but I believe that is a fault of the judge, he obviously agree's with the recommendations of the DA or he wouldn't go along with them.

So, Convince me and I will vote otherwise. But please don't try to convince me that Ms. Matousek is a better alternative, she brings just to much baggage for my tastes. "

Buck wrote on May 30, 2008 4:15 PM:

RE Jack Titter wrote on May 30, 2008 12:37 PM:

" Hey Jack - How many people do you actually know or talk to that work with or around Gerald Fox? Your opinion might change if you were a little more informed. "

Jack Titter wrote on May 29, 2008 9:22 PM:

" I think Gerald Fox has done a fine job of District Attorney. What is all this talk about a poor work ethic? Seems to me that about the only time he is gone is when he has a military obligation.

I recall a former DA who spent the better part of his year chasing his wife around the world, and don't recall a wimper out of you guys. I quite frankly don't think you know what you want. You don't want drunks sent to prison, you don't want to spend money on treatment, what is it that you do want?

You want him to take his cases into court and argue them to a jury? Then you haven't been watching the courts very closely. I doubt you could get a Jackson County jury to convict Jack the Ripper if he confessed and there were 33 eye witnesses and video evidence.

I will vote for Gerald Fox and will be proud to have him as the next DA. Robin Matousek? You got to be kidding "

Do you people have a clue wrote on May 29, 2008 9:02 PM:

" So, you want all these cases to go to trial so the county can spend more money without need and then listen to you people moan about your taxes going up and it is all Gerald's fault. Not all cases that have been happening in BRF are worthy of trials and easily cleared up with the pleas obviously. It is a realization to me that in this town and county wide, no one is happy with ANYONE that is voted in or hired at the county level or city level. I can guarantee Robyn wouldn't be running to trial with every case either and would be offering the "plea agreements" as well. Gerald is doing his job. It is just not to your liking. Did you or a family member get in trouble and he didn't let you or them off easily? By the looks of the posts on any county/city matter on this site, no one does anything good in this town. Maybe one of you could become a lawyer so you can run against him and do a MUCH better job than anyone who has held that job. I think Gerald is doing a great job. "

concerned citizen wrote on May 29, 2008 10:27 AM:

" Fox says that he accomplished all of his goals that he set out to do in his first term? I don't remember seeing a list that short when he was campaigning last time. He also says he has "earned" the right to be our DA for the next four years? How does a work ethic like his and a track record like his earn him anything other than a kick in the butt on his way out the door? Has he actually argued a case in court yet? Or has he just plea bargained everything out? "

A New DA wrote on May 28, 2008 8:39 PM:

" I believe that Robin Matousek should run for DA again. Jackson County needs someone better than we have. I agree with the disgusted citizen, we need action. "

My Opinion wrote on May 28, 2008 3:56 PM:

" Good job Gerald Keep protecting BRF and forgetting you are the county (all of the county not just BRF DA) you are doing good at forgetting what happens in the rest of our county "

my opinion wrote on May 28, 2008 3:25 PM:

" Those working within the law community are relieved to hear that Mr. Fox intends to run again. He is level headed and committed to the betterment of Black River Falls, and believe it or not does work within the law! With no personal axe to grind, and having burned no bridges behind him as some others have done in BRF. How refreshing. Bein DA is not a part time job as some seem to think this should be. Being a DA does not mean being a vigilante, and there are those who seem to think it should be apparently. I for one appreciate his fairness, and no I haven't had any reason or necessity to negotiate a plea bargin with him. Good luch Gerald. "

a fan wrote on May 28, 2008 2:03 PM:

Another ineffective politician wrote on May 28, 2008 11:05 AM:

" Isn't it the DA's job to find the truth? Haven't seen that happen in a long time out of that office.
Someone with some ethical fortitude needs to get into this race. "

Disgusted citizen. wrote on May 28, 2008 9:09 AM:

" You betcha, I bet DA Fox accomplished all his goals in his first (AND HOPEFULLY his LAST) term in office. I am very sure he met his quota on plea agreements and such. "Seek justice in every case and protect the public"... Right... I just about soiled myself laughing at that statement. DA Fox, you should step aside and let another person who has the intesinal fortitude to ACTULLY try a case in court and let the JURY decide and not just shuffle paperwork. I for one flat refuse to give my vote to DA Fox. I did vote for him the first time around... *slaps own wrist*... Shame on me. We need a DA who wil walk the walk and not talk the talk. ACTION speaks louder than words. "
