Economy on mind of 3rd District voters

Congressman Ron Kind made a stop in Black River Falls on Monday, giving area residents an opportunity to get input from the U.S. representative who is up for re-election this November.

The session was held at the Jackson County Courthouse. Kind, who lives in La Crosse with his wife, Tawni, and two sons, represents the 3rd Congressional District of Wisconsin. He said the hot topic at the listening session was the nation's economy crisis, a problem that needs both short and long term answers.

"It will require a comprehensive national energy strategy to wean ourselves off of dependence on foreign oil," Kind, 45, told the Chronicle following the listening session. He said a possible solution is a greater investment in alternative and renewable forms of energy.

Another issue brought up at the listening session, Kind said, was the housing crisis, which is part of decline in the economy. "One of the things I'm very leery about is privatizing profits but socializing losses," he said. Kind said when large business firms experience loss, it is taxpayers who feel the cost.

"Taxpayers have to come bail them out and it doesn't make sense we continue that," Kind said. He said he is calling for a new economic policy that keeps up with rising costs, as well as health care reform coupled with the long term energy plan to reduce the strain on working families.

Kind said an issue that was not brought up was the war in Iraq, which he said is normally a popular topic at listening sessions. He said it is likely the topic is overshadowed by the state of the economy and energy prices.

Kind is seeking re-election for his sixth term in office. He was first elected to Congress in 1996. He said the official kickoff of his fall campaign will be the annual Corn Roast at the La Crosse County Fairgrounds on Saturday, Sept. 6.

As for a larger election being held this fall, Kind said the choice is simple. "If you think we're in desperate need of a new direction, Barack Obama is the best hope for offering this new direction for our country," he said. "It's either four more years of this or it's time for a change."

" Ron talk, talk, talk, do nothing Kind. What has this guy done the last ten years? "

liberal republican or conservative democrat wrote on Aug 1, 2008 9:51 PM:

" you talk about Kind raising taxes (which I am not for)---but you say nothing about President Bush increasing our national debt to record levels. Oh by the way China, India, and all the oil producing countries are scarfing up this debt and they are making billions of dollars every year on the interest of our national debt. Isn't it about time we put this liberal or conservative BS behind us and unite as a nation like our fore fathers intended instead of listening to these idiots on tv and radio expounding their personal agendas on us. Just some thing to think about. Increasing the national debt is no different than increasing taxes---either we pay now or our children will be paying later. "

A Stark change is needed wrote on Jul 30, 2008 12:12 AM:

" Vote Paul Stark for congress. Time to replace the liberal tax spending Kind. Kind is preaching energy independance yet blocks any attempts for domestic drilling needed to create that independance. "

" Liberals can't seem to figure out what they should be exploiting from day to day. Passing up our Nation's Heroes for what? Leaders of countries which are against us. Crazy! I am more worried about a lib getting into office and raising our taxes. People think the economy is bad? Vote Liberal and wait for our dollar to go much less further. As for the Iraq war not being brought up? Did he offer to discuss it? Apparently not. "

" ++ Visit to US Military Bases Cancelled ++

Commander-in-chief?
1:42 p.m.: SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned that Obama has cancelled a planned short visit to the Rammstein and Landstuhl US military bases in the southwest German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The visits were planned for Friday. "Barack Obama will not be coming to us," a spokesperson for the US military hospital in Landstuhl announced. "I don't know why." Shortly before the same spokeswoman had announced a planned visit by Obama. "
