No one was injured and pets were saved in a fire at K-9 Country Lodge last week.

The fire, believed to be caused as a result of attic insulation work, was reported on Nov. 17 at about 9:30 p.m. at W11864 Highway C in Albion, according to the Black River Falls Fire Department.

Upon arrival, Black River Falls Fire Chief Steve Schreiber said the single-story structure showed signs of smoke and the fire was located in the attic.

Firefighters opened the ceiling area above a kitchen to expose the fire and extinguish the flames. Schreiber said the fire and damage was confined to the attic and ceiling of the kitchen area.

Pets being housed at K-9 Country Lodge, owned by Marlee and Rich Slifka of Black River Falls, were evacuated and taken to a nearby building.

Schreiber said the cause of the fire was found to be a trouble light being used by a construction company doing insulation work in the attic. The construction company — Balts Construction of The Chippewa Valley based in Chippewa Falls — stated insulation caught fire when it came in contact with the light while workers were in the attic earlier in the day.

Workers stated they extinguished fire embers and left the attic at 5 p.m., noting no sign of smoke was present at that time.

“It appears that not all of the fire embers were found from the trouble light incident and that the fire then rekindled in the blown-in type installation,” Schreiber said. “The construction company is commended for coming forward with the information for the cause of this fire.”

The property and the construction company are insured. A damage estimate was not known as of press time.

The Black River Falls Fire Department sent 15 firefighters and six units to the scene for just over two hours.
